Cub Scouts Appear On KOIN-TV Program

Cub Scout Pack 519, sponsored by the Longview Junior Chamber of Commerce, recently traveled to Portland where the boys appeared on television station KOIN-TV during the Red Dunning program.

The boys making the trip were Dennis Bauman, Leroy Hage, Gary Koegler, Jimmy Anderson, Vernon Miller, Louis Whitaker, John Perry, and Michael Pery of Den 4; Dennis Johnson, Michael Lee, Patrick Kelly, Louis McGill, Virgil McGill, Ronney Kuhn, Skippy Harmon, Larry Klingeman, Frank Cox, Jimmy Cox and Richard Crane of Den 1.

Accompanying the boys were Mrs. Robert Lee, Mrs. Glenn Bauman, den mothers, and Mrs. George Perry, assistant den mother.

A grand total of 759 youngsters in the southwestern Washington and lower Columbia River district competed in the second annual Little People's Christmas Coloring Contest held last week under sponsorship of the Longview Daily News.

Top awards in the competition, which involved coloring four sketches appearing in The Daily News, went to Irene Zvirgzdins, 9 years old, Martin Apartments, and David Green, 10 years old, 828 18th Ave., both Longview. Their entries were forwarded to Cleveland, Ohio, for entry in the national contest. Youngsters from all over the United States are competing in the national event, which will conclude Dec. 14 and the winners will be named late this month.

An array of toys are being presented to the youngsters winning in the local contest. Other winners included:

Entries were received from communities throughout the area. Cities and towns represented on the entry list included Longview, Kelso, Castle Rock, Kalama, Woodland, Cathlamet, Toutle Lake, Toledo, Winlock, Rainier, Naselle, Skamokawa, Seaview, Ryderwood, Vader, Carrolls, Altoona, Ocean Park, Rosburg and Vernonia.

Prizes won in The Daily News contest will be available for the winners at the newspaper office this afternoon and Wednesday. Youngsters not visiting the office by 5 p.m. Wednesday will receive their prizes through the mail.

Mildred Eva Hage 1920-2006

Mildred Eva Hage, 86, died October 7, 2006 at Hospice Care Center in Longview. She was born April 10, 1920 In Black River, Missouri to Arthur and Geneva (Ross) Voreis. The family moved to Lakeport, California in 1925. She married Anfin Hage January 20, 1940 in Reno, Nevada. They lived in Lakeport until moving to Longview in 1950.

Mildred went to work at R.A. Long High School in May of 1953 as a custodian. She worked there for 29 years until retiring in the spring of 1982. She saw two generations of her family graduate from R.A. Long High School while she was working there (her four children and two of her grandsons.) Mildred loved her family. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved sports, especially when her grandchildren and great grandchildren were playing. She was there for every game. Mildred also was a Portland Trail Blazer fan and she never missed a game if she could help it. Mildred loved working in her yard. She had many beautiful flowers and had a small garden every year.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband in 1977, a sister Iris Waage in 1975, and a brother Ross Voreis in 1988. Survivors include: One son, Leroy (Rose) Hage of Longview; three daughters Janice (Wally) Marthaller of Longview, Avon Luce of Salem, Oregon, Bonnie Hage of Portland, Oregon; a brother Richard Voreis of Kaysville, Utah; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral Service will be held 11:00 A.M., Thursday, October 12, 2006 at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park with Richard Voreis officiating. Interment will be held at Longview Memorial Park.
