Erik was born in Normal, Illinois and moved to California when he was 6. He grew up in Novato, California and attended Santa Rosa Junior College. He then moved to Grover Beach in Southern California with his father, Ed. While there he started learning Tae Kwon Do. He moved back to the Bay Area and continued studying martial arts, learning Preying Mantis style Kung Fu and Tai Chi. He fell in love with Kendra Stone during his studies, and he took her son Matthew under his wing.
