Ed grew up in the hills of Oakland. He went to college in Washington, where he got his degree in Chemistry. He got a teaching job at an Illinois college, and lived in that area for several years. He eventually moved with his wife and two kids to San Francisco, California to work for PG&E doing emergency planning. After many years, he moved to Pismo Beach, California, continuing to work for PG&E at Diablo Canyon. He retired from PG&E, and after a few years of relaxation, took up a year long contract job for the IAEA in Vienna, Austria in 2004, where his team was awarded the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize "for their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way."
