In 1941, Harald Smith was a sailor on the Bolette Dampskip (steamship), and lived in Drammen. The Bolette was loaded with coal when the Germans attacked it on April 15, 1941. The ship capsized, and Harald and eight other crew members died. The rest of the crew were rescued.
His brother, Einer, named his first born son after Harald.
