Sarah Purvis grew up in Scotland county, Missouri. She married a local boy, Daniel Fernand, at the age of 17. They had one child together, but Daniel died shortly after. A few years after her husband's death, she remarried, to a Uriah Covey, from a neighboring county.
They moved some time before 1870 to Mendocino, California, with Sarah's daughter, Ann Fernald, and their several children.
At the age of 33, in 1880, Sarah and her husband were living in Analy township, in Sonoma. In 1900 at 61, she was living in Forestville township. After her husband's death in 1909, she continued to live in Sonoma county with her son, William.
By then, her family had close ties to the Ross family which lived in the Sonoma county area. Three of her children, William, Amanda and Daniel, had married three of the William Ross and Sarah Kay grandchildren.
